Dyfed-Powys Independent Custody Visiting Scheme receives national quality award
The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) for Dyfed-Powys has received national recognition for the high quality of its Independent Custody Visiting Scheme after achieving a Gold Quality Assurance Award from the Independent Custody Visiting Association (ICVA).
The award, presented at a ceremony in London on 8 July, recognises schemes that demonstrate excellence in supporting Independent Custody Visitors and ensuring effective independent oversight of police custody.
Independent Custody Visitors are trained volunteers from local communities who make unannounced visits to police custody suites to check on the rights, welfare and treatment of people detained in police custody. Their findings are reported to the Police and Crime Commissioner, helping to provide transparency, accountability and public confidence in policing.
The ICVA Quality Assurance Framework assesses how well custody visiting schemes across England and Wales meet national standards, recognising those that demonstrate good practice, effective management and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Welcoming the award, Police and Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn said:
“Independent Custody Visitors play a vital role in helping maintain public confidence in policing by providing independent oversight of our custody suites.
“This national recognition reflects the dedication and professionalism of our volunteers and the staff who support the scheme. Together, they help ensure that people detained in police custody are treated fairly, with dignity and respect.
“I would like to thank every volunteer for giving their time and commitment to this important role. Their work makes a real difference and helps strengthen transparency and accountability across policing in Dyfed-Powys.”
Tom, Quality of Service Caseworker at the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, accepted the Gold Quality Assurance Award on behalf of the scheme at the ceremony in London.
Dame Anne Owers, Chair of ICVA, said:
“Once again, these awards show the value and importance of independent custody visiting, with even more schemes being awarded the top ‘platinum’ grading. This also reflects the crucial work that ICVA does, in providing support and training for volunteers and schemes across the country.”
