The Dyfed-Powys Police Independent Advisory Group (IAG) provides the valuable role of critical friend to the Police Service and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC). It is a forum where members of the public can advise us on specific issues identified by the police and the OPCC.

The role of the IAG is not one of scrutiny, but provides a safeguard against disadvantaging any section of our communities through a lack of understanding, ignorance or mistaken belief. Our IAG members are often able to use lived experience to offer unique insight, help, and support as we make changes to the way we provide services, to our policies, and on a range of other matters.

The IAG consists of a cross-representation of our diverse communities, in terms of age, gender, gender reassignment, disability, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation and Welsh language.

One of our key objectives in our Strategic Equality Plan 2020-2024, developed jointly between Dyfed-Powys Police and the OPCC is:

To improve our understanding of our diverse communities in order to ensure that our services are fit for purpose, and that all of our communities have a voice in policing.

In order to achieve this particular objective we must ensure that our communities have a direct voice in policing matters, and the Independent Advisory Group plays a huge part in this.

A full explanation of how we identified these equality objectives, together with the actions we plan to take to achieve them can be found in our Strategic Equality Plan 2020-2024

The IAG meet virtually, every 3 months so you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your own home! Details will be provided on how to access the online meetings.

You can also represent the IAG at other meetings that may be of interest to you.

"I joined the IAG after I retired from PAVO as a Mental Health Development Worker. I had been an attender at the Dyfed-Powys Police Crisis and Equality Meeting run in Llandrindod as part of my role as a Development Worker. I had been impressed by the way in which the Inspector, responsible for the group, took on board suggestions that might improve the service provided by the Police. It was this openness to ideas and a 'cando' attitude that encouraged me to join the IAG. I  have not been disappointed." | Derek Turner , IAG member

“I wanted to volunteer for the IAG because I know the value of collecting diverse opinions and viewpoints in policy and strategy setting. I work to reduce inequalities in access and success in education, trying to give people of all ages opportunities and aspirations. Understanding more about the services provided in Dyfed-Powys and how priorities are set is interesting and the time commitment is really manageable. I hope that I can bring a different perspective, from outside of the professional roles of policing, diversion, intervention and victim support." | Debra Croft , IAG member
