Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Dafydd Llywelyn spent the day in Aberystwyth on Tuesday 25 February as part of a community engagement visit, meeting with students, partners and local residents.

The day began at Aberystwyth University where the PCC delivered a guest lecture to students titled Policing the Future: Reform, Legitimacy and the Welsh Context. The session explored the future of policing in Wales, the importance of public trust and legitimacy, and how reform can respond to the changing needs of communities.

During the visit, the PCC also met with one of our Youth Ambassadors, discussing the role young people play in shaping policing and community safety across the Dyfed-Powys area.

The PCC then met with representatives from Dewis Choice to learn more about the support they provide and the impact of partnership working in the local area.

The visit concluded at the Marine Hotel, where the PCC attended the first Community Scrutiny Panel to be held in this format. The panel gives members of the public the opportunity to independently review police contact with the public, helping to strengthen transparency, accountability and public confidence.

Donna Cronin, Head of Assurance at the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) said:
Independent scrutiny is a cornerstone of public trust in policing. The community scrutiny panel allows members of the public to examine police contact with communities in an open and transparent way, providing constructive challenge and meaningful feedback.

“The work is central to the OPCC’s role in holding the police to account and ensuring that policing across the Dyfed-Powys area is ethical, proportionate and rooted in the experiences of the communities it serves.”

Police and Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn said:
“Days like today are a vital part of my role as Police and Crime Commissioner. Speaking with students, young people, partners and members of the public helps ensure policing in the Dyfed-Powys area continues to be shaped by the communities it serves.

“The Community Scrutiny Panel is an important step in strengthening transparency and public confidence and I am grateful to everyone who took the time to be involved in the first panel of its kind.”
